Our Preservation Process

Most painters start with a brush. We start with a diagnosis. On Vancouver Island's wet coast, this is what separates a paint job from true home preservation.

Why Prep Matters More Than Paint

Here's a truth most painting companies won't tell you: the paint itself is only 20% of a lasting finish. The other 80% is preparation.

In the Comox Valley and Campbell River, this matters even more. A premium coating applied over moisture-damaged wood, failed caulking, or improperly cleaned surfaces will fail within two years — no matter how good the product. Our coastal rain, salt air, and constant humidity demand a higher standard of prep than anywhere else in BC.

At VIP, we invest the time and expertise to prepare every surface properly. It takes longer. It costs more. And it's the only way to deliver results that actually last on Vancouver Island.

01

Moisture & Surface Diagnostic

Before we touch a brush, we need to understand what's happening beneath the surface. Comox Valley and Campbell River homes face constant moisture pressure from rain, humidity, ocean proximity, and ground-level splash-back. These forces drive moisture into wood, behind siding, and under trim — causing rot, paint failure, and structural damage that's invisible from the outside.

Our diagnostic process uses professional-grade moisture meters and a trained eye to identify problem areas. We check every surface for:

  • Elevated moisture content in wood substrates
  • Early-stage and advanced wood rot
  • Failed or missing caulking and flashing
  • Previous paint or coating failures
  • Mould or mildew growth patterns
  • Drainage issues contributing to moisture buildup

This step alone prevents thousands of dollars in premature paint failure. Most painters skip it entirely — but on the island's coast, skipping it is a guarantee of early failure.

Full Surface Preparation

With the diagnostic complete, we know exactly what each surface needs. Preparation is where most of the project time is invested — and where the real value is created for your Comox Valley or Campbell River home.

Depending on your home's condition and the service tier you've selected, our preparation work includes:

  • Professional pressure washing and cleaning
  • Scraping and removal of loose or failing paint
  • Wood rot repair and replacement
  • Complete caulking replacement
  • Sanding all surfaces for proper adhesion
  • Spot and full priming as required
  • Masking and protection of all non-paint surfaces
  • Final surface inspection before coating

Only when every surface is clean, sound, dry, and properly primed do we move to the next step. This discipline is what makes VIP results last years longer in our demanding coastal environment.

Premium Eco-Friendly Coating Application

Now comes the transformation. With a properly prepared surface, premium coatings can perform the way they were engineered to — providing years of colour retention, moisture resistance, and UV protection for your island home.

We exclusively use Sherwin-Williams and Benjamin Moore products — including their low-VOC and zero-VOC lines. These eco-friendly formulations are safer for your family, better for Vancouver Island's environment, and perform just as well as conventional products. We match the specific product to your home's exposure, substrate, and the unique conditions of the Comox Valley or Campbell River.

"Preservation-grade" coating means we're not just choosing a colour. We're specifying the right product chemistry for your home's coastal conditions — acrylic vs. alkyd, self-priming vs. separate primer, satin vs. semi-gloss — based on sun exposure, moisture levels, proximity to the ocean, and substrate type.

Application is done by experienced painters using the right technique for each surface — brush, roll, or spray — with careful attention to film thickness, coverage, and drying conditions specific to our West Coast weather.

Annual Warranty Check-In

Our relationship with your home doesn't end when the last brush stroke dries. Every VIP project comes with a preservation warranty, and our Premium tier includes annual Preservation Visits for the life of the warranty.

During each annual visit to your Comox Valley or Campbell River home, we:

  • Inspect all coated surfaces for coastal wear or damage
  • Check for new moisture intrusion points
  • Perform small touch-ups at no additional charge
  • Re-caulk any areas showing early failure
  • Document the condition of your home's exterior
  • Provide recommendations for ongoing maintenance

This proactive approach catches small issues before they become expensive problems. A $50 touch-up today prevents a $5,000 repair next year. That's the preservation mindset — and it's what makes VIP different from every other painting company on Vancouver Island.
